23 October 2024

Commencement 10:00 am

On the initiative of the Hooghe Heerlickheyt Wernhout foundation, the liberation monument will be unveiled on 23 October 2024.

The foundation wants to honour all liberators and the fallen for the battle they fought to liberate our village. Out of respect and gratitude, they want to commemorate this permanently. To this end, they have designed a plaque showing the areas where the fighting took place and the symbols of the liberators are indicated on it. The plaque was designed because Guido van Wassenhove wrote the war books of the 1st and 2nd World Wars in the neighbouring Belgian municipalities.

This plaque is placed against a V-shaped steel construction that also indicates the meaning of freedom. The V has the meaning of: Victory, Freedom, Peace, Security Bonding and Stories.

It promises to be a grand unveiling

With bells ringing, visitors will be welcomed.
After the welcome speech and short introduction, mayor Joyce Vermue, family members of the Timberwolves from America and Leo Stes chairman of our foundation will unveil the monument. Afterwards, pastor Hans van Geel will bless the monument.

The speeches will be made by mayor Joyce Vermue, a representative of the American Timberwolves. Afterwards, wreaths will be laid. Adrie Oostvogels va the fanfare Wernhout vooruit will play The Last Post. This will be followed by 2 minutes of silence in memory of the fallen. The veterans’ section of Zundert, led by Jaack Duine, will hoist the 3 flags, with the national anthems being played simultaneously by the brass band. Guido van Wassenhove will read a reflection.

Ria Huisman of the foundation will give the closing address and visitors can lay flowers afterwards. The invited will gather in the Wierenbos to talk for a while.

In this way, our liberators will be commemorated with dignity.
